Job Search TIP #1 for International Students and New Immigrants

Updated: Oct 4, 2020

#1 Hang out with your friends.

Hiding in your apartment because you're soooooo busy applying for jobs, isn't going to help you get a job. Applying for jobs everyday is exhausting. And getting negative emails every day is exhausting. Go out with your friends. Have fun. Tell them you're struggling. Talk to your friends about what you want to do in life.

I have applied to about one hundred jobs in four countries. Hearing 'no, you're not the right candidate' in four different languages is stressful and painful and exhausting.

I wanted to talk to my friends about my struggles, but I was embarrassed. I didn't want to talk to my parents because I didn't want to worry them while I was so far away. I didn't want strangers to think I was a failure. That's a lot of pressure in addition to just finding a job.

Take a deep breath. Hang out with your friends. Tell them about your struggles and say, 'you don't have to solve the problem, but I could use a friendly person to talk to right now."
